Mountain Misery

Oh, the mountain house! We do love it. But oh, that ride up. And on Christmas Day! That was just cruel and inhumane punishment! It took us a full day to recover, but I still remember that feeling....

Christmas Day

Tara, why are we in this funny moving green box?

We are going to the mountain house Kavan.

I like the mountain house, but ohhhhhh, I'm not feeling so good....

Its the motion, just try to lay down on go to sleep.

But there is so much to see, oh, oh, I need, I need to go....{goes for the litter box in the back seat, but partially misses...}...I'm sorry Mom....

I know sweetie, this isn't bad, I can clean up up right now.

Ohhhh.....I think I'm going to yak..{goes for the litter box again, pretty much makes it this time}

Poor baby, I'm sorry you aren't feeling so good.

Me too Kavan, here, crawl into Mom's lap, and I'll lick your furs.

Ok, thanks Tara....ohhh...I think I'm going to die....

Please, just put me out of my misery....

Ohhh....zzzzzz....droool.....

(30 minutes away from the mountain house) Mom, are we almost there? I'm not feeling so good either...droool....

Hang in there Tara, you have been so good, look, here we are!

Really, Really? Come on Kavan, we are here!

Have I died yet?

Mom here. Poor Kavan gets so car sick (I'm sure its related to his ruptured ear drum when he was a kitten). Within the first hour, he has usually cleaned everything out that might be in his system (and I don't feed them at all for at least 3 hours before we leave), then he just lays on my lap and looks so pathetic, and periodically drools, another sign of motion sickness. By the end of the trip, Tara, who is always so good siting on her seat between Dad and me, was drooling a bit too, so I know she was starting not to feel too good. Has anyone had any experience giving either Benadryl or Dramamine to cats for motion sickness? I've read enough to know its safe, and I will talk to my vet first, but does it work? I've seen some information that says cats don't have the histamine receptors needed for these drugs to work. Any advice welcome. We will be here another 8 or 9 days, so I would like their trip back to be a little smoother.

Awwwww, I dunno - none of us get carsick. Maybe the change in altitude makes it worse???

I know EXACTLY what you mean. I have the same problem when we pack up to go to the seaside house. FAZ

Oh poor Kavan! I used to be very good in the car and sleep the whole way on my mommy or on the back seat but this holiday I had to stay in my cage because of all the gifts on the back seat (I eat ribbons and bows so I can't be near the gifts). So I cried gently most of the way, I cried less when my mommy kept her hand in the cage on my paws so she stayed that way for the 2h 1/2 to get there and back. She has been complaining of a pulled shoulder/arm muscle ever since. The previous cat my humans had would drool and have a panic cry for the shortest of car rides so his vet suggested he take half a gravol 30 minutes before a car ride so that he would be sleepy, it was of some help. Hope you don't mind taking pills!

Good luck on your trip back home Kavan and Tara, I will send lots of purrs and meezerly love!

P.S. The servants don't like it when you do your nails on the car seats...

MrsTara'sMom - when I hadded my ear infekshun, I hadded to take Dramamine so that I would not keep falling over. It werked ok, so it might werk ok for Kavan and Tara. The v-e-t told mommy to only give me 1/2 tablet, and i weigh 16 lbs, so you might want to talk to the v-e-t to find out how much to give Kavan 'cause he's littler than me.

Poor little Kavan.
Sorry, we have no advice on meds like that. Hope all are doing okay now.

Time for a nap,

Hmm...I've never been car sick but I have really only been to the VET's office. Kaze was fine her whole way from D.C. home as a kitten. Chase is the expert traveler and he's only been sick once in his 7 years traveling. I'd just call the VET and maybe even a light tranq might make it easier for them?

Dunno know about the car sickness, but we used to give Bow 1/2 Benadryl tablet (12.5mg)twice daily when he got a horrid URI. The specialist we saw told us we could give him the Benadryl as long as it took until he was better, in addition to the antibiotics he was on. He's 15 lbs. They must be bitter because he would drool like crazy after we gave it to him.

oh poor poor babies, how awful - I have little experience with this but I think asking the blogosphere is a great idea - someone will help! x

Poor Kavan. :( No advice on the carsickness, but definitely ask your vet. I love travelling in the car, and did six hours from my breeder's place to my Forever Home, and 8 hours to Switzerland, with no problems.

Da vet said we could give her da benadryl but it din't work, she got groggy and still barfed!

I would check with your vet on what that would do. Momma knows some good acupuncture points and herbs for people but we do not know if they work with cats!

You poor things, that sounds very terrible! At least the destination is worth the car-sickness. I wish I had some advice, but I have never been in a car for very long.

Mom says she is sorry, she doesn't know about cats, but she does have to give our doggie a dramamine or bonine when she goes for long car rides because, while she never bargs, she is miserable the whole time. If you call your normal vet, they can tell you how much over the phone.
