Sunday Taste Testing

So I'm really happy with my dry food. I've been eating Natural Balance for the last few weeks and like it quite a bit. Mom bought some Evo yesterday (she found a store in town that carried it), and I REALLY like it! She put some in a small bowl next to my regular bowl, and I scarfed it down. So she is going to mix it with the Natural Balance for a while, then I'll probably eventually just eat that. So I'm not going to starve....

However, the wet food stuff, most of it I just can't stand. Does Mom really expect me to eat that slop? I really like Fancy Feast Elegant Medleys, but it has wheat gluten. Mom tells me wheat gluten is to kitties like junk food is to humans (watch those McDonald’s French fries mom), so I’m not getting any. But come on, can’t I have some junk food every once in a while?

But Mom is really trying. She ordered some Merrick, which came in a cool box yesterday.

And this poppy plastic stuff inside was something else!
Inside, there were a few loose cans, and two variety packs of food to try.
The outside of the cans smelled pretty good. But alas, so far I haven't been impressed. So, I decided I would do periodic PSA on my taste evaluation of wet foods with no wheat gluten. There is a lot of good healthy food out there, unfortunately, most of it taste like {insert bad word here} , and not worthy of a princess meezer. Here are the results of my taste tests to date:

AvoDerm Select Cuts
Chunks of Meat in Gravy-this looked like chicken bits in gelatin goo..not for me
California Natural
Chicken and Brown Rice-this is in my bowl now, I’m letting it age a bit before trying, but so far, I'm not impressed
Fancy Feast Varieties with No Wheat Gluten (need to read label carefully!)
Savory Salmon-Pretty good if canned salmon mixed in with it
Turkey and Giblets Feast-OK sometimes, but I need to be in the mood for this one
Flaked Fish and Shrimp Feast - I used to really like this, now I’m sticking my nose up at it, I just got tired of the flavor
Gourmet Chicken Feast - Yuck, didn’t even like this with canned chicken mixed in
Merrick
Southern Delight - this was reasonable, but not worth eating the entire portion
New England Boil - not really my taste
Thanksgiving day dinner - major Yuucck, looked like brown glop
Natural Balance Ultra Premium
Salmon - a bit too slimy for my taste, but might try it with canned salmon mixed in
Sheba Premium Cuts
Chicken Breast Dinner with Sauce - a nice delicate sauce, this was pretty good
Chicken and Duck Dinner with Sauce - a few bites of this went a long way

Mom has an entire cupboard of different flavors of the above brands she is subjecting me to. I’ll report periodically on review of their taste. If you have ideas of stuff I can try, let me know, and I'll put my discerning meezer palate to work.

I am glad you found some dry foodies that you like. You are doing a good service to taste test the different varieties of stinky goodness. I hope you find some you like. It's too bad you did not really like the Merrick food because it is pretty wholesome.

Tara, I'm with you; I don't like wet food. You and your mom are sure going to a lot of trouble trying out all those foods. I eat dry Science Diet Senior and have for years. I say, why change now?

Mom never much tried wet foods with us except for special occasions--and I turned my nose up at them. However, once Jake got his hyperthyroidism diagnosis this past summer and needed pills twice daily, Mom had to think of something to get the pills in him. She slips the pills in the food and he scarfs them down. Of course, he eats almost ANYthing.

we only like mush - no chunks. we've been eating Innova, which is very healthy and "crap-free", but the Lady was thinking of trying Merrick too. the problem is, we can't tell from the labels whether or not it has chunks. have you come across any flavors that are just one big pile of mush? (also known as "loaf" form)

Wow, you do seem to have a major Princess attitude toward your foodstuffs!!! We're crackin' up!

By the way, you might try Nature's Variety (Prairie) canned food - we like beef the best. (Although Mom's still sort of mad at NV for never emailing her back.)

All we really like canned wise these days is Sheba. We are tired of Meow Mix already. Poor Mommy keeps trying. We had some EVO as kittens, but it gave us stinky farts. Now that our systems are more developed, maybe we should try it again. Keep us posted on your food trials.
